Generation and test are fundamental components of the design process. Understanding the design process requires understanding the interplay between these components. Computational synthesis focuses primarily on the generate side of the equation, suggesting design candidates under the assumption of a fixed evaluation model. Decision-based design focuses on the test/select side, focusing on understanding the design evaluation model assuming a fixed set of design options. Conceptual design requires coupling synthesis under an incomplete, uncertain evaluation model with selection not only of design candidates but also of paths toward refining the evaluation model.
