It is beneficial for a brake or clutch with an internal shoe to be self-aligning and thereby affected in the least possible manner by an eccentricity of the drum or other dimensional variations in the parts of the assembly. This is achieved by connecting one end of the shoe to a floating link. In addition, the proportions should be arranged so as to cause the wear to be distributed as evenly as possible for all points of the lining. These desirable qualities can be achieved by means of the simple design equation presented here.
